eSight Q&A

Learn more about eSight by reading the Q&A below.

What is eSight?

eSight is an amazing technological breakthrough – electronic glasses that let the visually impaired actually see.

eSight is a breakthrough assistive device that enhances the functional vision of a person who has low vision. eSight is registered with the FDA and EUDAMED, and is inspected by Health Canada. It is also the only clinically validated wearable tecnology of its kind.

Most importantly, eSight requires no surgery. Almost instantly after putting them on, an individual with low vision can see in virtually the same manner as someone who is fully sighted.

Does eSight actually work?

It really does. There are thousands of videos and media articles on our social media and website that feature individuals with visual impairment who can now see thanks to eSight.

Additionally, a major clinical trial, eQuest, was conducted in September 2016 to evaluate the efficacy of the eSight device for various everyday activities for individuals with significant impairment resulting from various eye conditions. The results of this study demonstrated strong objective evidence of the value of eSight in a low vision population. These results were published in the September 2018 issue of Optometry and Vision Science.

What is eSight’s guiding principle?

eSight fundamentally believes that Everyone Deserves To See! We believe this to be true no matter someone’s age, walk of life, cause of vision loss or ability to pay. This is especially true now that a technology like eSight exists that enables individuals with vision impairment to actually see.

How did eSight come to be?

eSight’s founder, a successful electrical engineer, has two sisters who are visually impaired. In 2006, he said to himself, “If I can assemble teams of engineers who can build incredible products for the commercial market, why not assemble an engineering team that can build electronic glasses that would let my sisters see?”

The eSight engineers had a unique vision for a totally new and revolutionary type of solution they wanted to build. For eSight to be truly useful for the visually impaired, the technology would have to:

  • Be a comfortable, wearable and hands-free device, allowing individuals to use both of their hands while they use eSight to see.

  • Be able to replicate the way sighted people see by “instantaneously” auto-focusing between short-range vision (reading a book or text on a smartphone) to mid-range vision (seeing faces or watching TV) to long-range vision (looking down a hallway or outside a window), without any perceptible lag time.

  • Be a sophisticated, comprehensive medical device that could replace all the many single-task assistive devices that are currently available but do not provide actual sight (e.g. white canes, magnifying devices, service animals, Braille machines, CCTV scanners, text-to-speech software, etc.).

  • Provide true mobility so that a visually impaired individual could use eSight, not just to see while sitting down but be independently mobile (e.g. walking, exercising, commuting to work or school, taking a plane, playing golf, etc.).

  • Enable individuals with vision loss to independently carry out virtually all everyday activities.

After many years of hard work, millions of dollars in investments, several patented innovations and extensive collaboration with individuals with legal blindness, the result was eSight: electronic glasses that enable individuals with visual impairment to actually see as in the same way as those with full vision.

The founder’s two sisters use eSight today, and participate fully and independently in their everyday lives. This sheer ingenuity, and intersection of technology and humanity, have created the breakthrough that is eSight.

How does eSight work?

  • A high speed, high resolution camera in the middle of the eSight electronic glasses captures what a user is looking at in real time.

  • eSight’s powerful computer instantly processes the high definition video and displays it on two OLED screens in front of the user’s eyes using cutting edge optics.

  • eSight’s proprietary algorithms enhance the video feed.

  • Full color video images can be clearly seen by the eSight user with unprecedented visual clarity and no perceptible latency or delay.

  • With eSight’s patented Bioptic Tilt capability, users can be mobile while using the device. They can tilt the eyewear to the precise position that, for them, presents the best view of the video feed, while maximizing their natural peripheral vision (which is often still functional for people with low vision). This, along with imperceptible short latency, ensures that a user’s balance is not disturbed and, hence, no nausea occurs – common problems with immersive technologies such as virtual reality headsets.

  • eSight users can easily optimize what they are looking at using a sleek controller and intuitive user interface to control color, contrast, focus, brightness and magnification (24X).

  • eSight users can take photos, and stream video and games with eSight’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI capabilities.

Who does eSight work for?

eSight works for the overwhelming majority of individuals with vision loss.

According to the World Health Organization, there are approximately 253 million people in the world who are legally blind or visually impaired. Less than 15% of this population are totally blind. Unfortunately, eSight cannot currently help this population. However, the remaining 85% of the world’s 253 million individuals have low vision, and eSight can work for most of this larger population.

Current eSight users come from a variety of walks of life. Our youngest user is four years old, and our oldest user is 101 years old. We are also proud to say that our eSight users are spread across over 42 countries, and counting.

eSight users across the world have over 50 different eye conditions, including (but not limited to): Aniridia, Cataracts, Coloboma, Cone-Rod Dystrophy, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Ocular Albinism, Macular Degeneration, Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), Stargardt's Disease, Optic Neuritis, Retinal Detachment, and many more.

What can I do with eSight?

The short answer: virtually anything.

eSight enables people with vision loss to actually see. What they do with their newly restored sight is up to them. Aside from operating a motor vehicle and going swimming, this extends to virtually all independent Activities of Daily Living including:

  • Seeing the faces of loved ones, in some cases for the first time

  • Going to school or university

  • Using a computer or smartphone

  • Watching TV

  • Reading

  • Traveling independently

  • Working in an office or factory

  • Viewing sporting and cultural events

  • Arts and crafts

  • Cooking

  • Walking

  • Playing sports

  • Resuming previously abandoned hobbies (cards, woodworking, etc.)

  • And many others

eSight does so much more than restore sight. eSight restores a person's independence, confidence, self-esteem and freedom. eSight is changing lives every day and it can change yours too.

Note: eSight wearers are encouraged to use this breakthrough technology within their comfort zone, and should not partake in any activities that would put either themselves or someone else in a harmful situation.

What is better about your most recent announcement, eSight 3?

eSight 3 is the newest version of eSight Eyewear, and is a dramatic leap forward from the previous generation of eSight (eSight 2). It sports a sleek new form factor, is significantly lighter and smaller than eSight 2, contains key performance improvements in areas such as image quality, zoom (24X) and field of view (wider), and, has brand new Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI capabilities for content streaming. All of this is available for a much more affordable price. Speak to an eSight Vision Advocate today who will be happy to tell you more about eSight 3.

What clinical evidence exists to prove that eSight really works?

eSight is the only wearable technology of its kind-- designed specifically for the population of individuals with vision impairment -- that is clinically validated. Unlike most manufacturers of assistive devices for individuals with vision loss, eSight believes it is not enough to just say the technology is accurate. It must be proven. This is why eSight dedicated more time and effort to complete the clinical validation process. However, eSight’s clinical validation was necessary to uphold the highest standards of precision and reliability.

The most recent clinical study demonstrating eSight's efficacy was, eQuest, conducted in 2016. eQuest was an intensive cohort study that demonstrated how eSight provides an improvement to functional vision and Quality of Life, for individuals with significant visual impairment resulting from various eye conditions. This multi-study was conducted independently at the following preeminent low vision research and rehabilitation institutions in the United States and Canada:

The results from eQuest provided strong objective evidence of the value of eSight in a low vision population. This study demonstrated significant improvements in objective visual function measures, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) performance, and most importantly, patient-reported quality of life outcomes. eQuest results also cited that there was also no degradation in mobility performance, which is a significant limitation of all other head-worn video systems. These results were published in September 2018.
